As a professional carpet and rug technician at Carpet Kings Idaho, I’ve cleaned hundreds of rugs — everything from everyday area rugs to high-end Persian wool masterpieces. And over the years, one thing has become clear: every rug is unique, and not all cleaning methods are created equal.
This post walks you through how we clean rugs the right way, what makes our process different, and how our pickup and delivery rug cleaning service can save you time and give you peace of mind in Coeur d’Alene, Spokane, and surrounding areas.
Why Professional Rug Cleaning Matters
Vacuuming is great for surface dirt. But underneath? Most rugs hide layers of ground-in soil, sand, hair, dander, and bacteria — especially in homes with pets or kids. Rugs act like a filter for your floor, and without professional cleaning, they fill up fast.
Most people either don’t know how to clean their rug safely, or they’re afraid of damaging it. That’s totally understandable — wool, silk, viscose, and cotton rugs all require special handling.
That’s where we come in.
We offer complete rug care with pickup and delivery service — no need to lift or transport your rug. We handle everything, and we clean each rug based on its specific material and condition, not just one standard process.
Who We Serve
Our rug cleaning service is available throughout North Idaho and Eastern Washington, including:
Coeur d’Alene
Post Falls
Hayden
Rathdrum
Spokane
Liberty Lake
Sandpoint
Surrounding towns
We work with homeowners, businesses, short-term rentals, and property managers. If your rug lives in this region — we’ll come get it.
Our Rug Spa: The 10-Step Process
Every rug we clean goes through our ten-step rug spa process — carefully designed and tailored for each rug’s fiber type, construction, and condition.
Here’s what happens when you book a rug with us:
1. Dry Soil Removal
We start by removing dry soil with a combination of rug beating and heavy-duty vacuuming. This is one of the most important steps — dry, gritty soil is abrasive and can wear down rug fibers over time. Getting it out before we introduce moisture is essential.
2. Odor Neutralizing Treatment
If your rug has absorbed pet odors, mildew, or mustiness, we apply a bacteria-targeting deodorizer. We don’t just mask odors with fragrances — we neutralize them at the source so they don’t come back.
3. Pre-Treatment
Next, we apply a gentle, fiber-appropriate pre-spray to break down oils, stains, and buildup. This product is selected based on your rug’s material — whether it’s synthetic, wool, silk, or something else.
4. Gentle Agitation
We use soft brushes or specialty tools to gently agitate the pre-treatment into the fibers. This lifts up embedded soil and helps stains start to break apart without damaging the rug's structure.
5. Hot Water Extraction (Synthetics Only)
For synthetic fiber rugs (like polypropylene and nylon), we perform a hot water extraction. This step uses heat, pressure, and vacuum to rinse and extract deep soil, oils, and cleaning agents.
Note: We do not use hot water extraction on wool, silk, cotton, viscose, or other natural fibers. These materials are sensitive to heat and over-wetting, and can shrink or distort if cleaned improperly. For natural rugs, we use low-moisture methods, including cold water hand washing or delicate immersion, depending on the rug’s needs.
6. Targeted Spot Treatment
After rinsing, we inspect for stubborn stains — like pet accidents, ink, wine, or grease. Each stain gets individual treatment with specialty spot removers tailored to your rug’s fiber and dye stability.
7. Final Rinse and Extraction
Once the spots are treated, we give your rug a final rinse using clear water and extract it completely. This ensures no soap or residue is left behind, which helps prevent rapid resoiling and fiber stiffness.
8. Included Hydrophobic Protection
Before drying, we apply a fiber-safe hydrophobic protector to the rug — at no extra cost.
This is not an upsell. It’s part of our standard service and one of the ways we provide added value for the price. This invisible treatment helps repel future stains, improves vacuuming efficiency, and keeps your rug looking better between cleanings.
9. Controlled Drying
Your rug is then placed in our climate-controlled drying area, where it’s hung or laid flat (depending on construction) and dried using proper airflow and dehumidifiers. This ensures the rug dries evenly, without warping, browning, or lingering odors.
10. Final Vacuum, Grooming & Wrap
Once dry, we give the rug a final vacuum and grooming to lift the fibers and restore its look. Then it’s carefully rolled, wrapped in breathable material, and prepped for delivery back to you — fresh, clean, and ready to use.
Rug Fibers We Commonly Clean
Different rugs need different care. That’s why we tailor our process based on your rug’s fiber type, which determines how much water, heat, and agitation it can safely handle.
Here are the most common fibers we see:
🔹 Synthetic Fibers
Polypropylene
Nylon
Polyester
These are durable, affordable, and respond well to hot water extraction. Often used in machine-made rugs found in living rooms, offices, and rentals.
🔹 Natural Fibers
Wool – Popular in handmade, Persian, and high-end rugs. Sensitive to pH, heat, and moisture.
Cotton – Common in flatweaves and dhurries. Tends to shrink and warp with too much water.
Silk – Delicate and shiny, often found in luxury and antique rugs. Requires hand washing.
Viscose/Rayon – Semi-synthetic; beautiful but extremely fragile when wet.
Each type demands its own method. That’s why we never use a cookie-cutter approach — every rug gets a cleaning process based on what it’s made of and how it’s constructed.
Types of Rugs We Clean
We clean a wide variety of rugs, including:
Synthetic area rugs from home stores
Hand-knotted Persian, Turkish, and Afghan rugs

Whether your rug cost $50 from Costco or $9,000 for a hand-knotted wool masterpiece, we treat it with the same level of care and precision. We’ve cleaned rugs for collectors, designers, estate managers, and everyday families — and we approach each job with the same commitment to quality and safety.
